Types of Emergency Contraception

There are several types of emergency contraception, which can help to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex:

  • Plan B One-Step®, one progestin-only pill
  • Next Choice ™, two progestin-only pills
  • High doses of regular birth control pills
  • In some cases, an IUD can be used as emergency contraception

The type of emergency contraception most people use is the Plan B One-Step® pill. Girls and guys can buy Plan B One-Step® at the pharmacy counter at drug stores if they are 17 and over with valid I.D. (like your driver’s license or identification card). You just have to ask the pharmacist at the counter for Plan B One-Step®.  If you are under 17, you can get Plan B One-Step® from a family planning clinic or your doctor.  Read more about how to get Plan B One-Step®.
